Last night, we headed "up north" for a weekend in Duluth. The true destination is the wedding this evening of the daughter of our very good friends, but we decided to make a weekend of the trip and enjoy some more time in Duluth and along the North Shore.
The wedding is taking place tonight in the historic Greysalon, on superior street, steps away from Canal Park. I'm sure it will be beautiful and a fun night.
We are staying in the recommended hotel - Sheraton Duluth - and it's our first stay here. Normally, in picking hotels for our travels, our focus is on comfort, quiet, convenience, and honestly, cost. Why spend more for a view for a room we will spend hardly any time in!?
When we checked into the Sheraton last night, we got the wonderful news that we were upgraded to a lakeside view room (one of the perks of always staying at Bonvoy Hotels on my twice or thrice-annual work trips, I guess, is that my account is finally starting to accrue some bonuses!).
We checked in just past sunset (i.e., near 9 pm, in July), and were treated to this beautiful sight upon reaching our room:

I sat on the fainting sofa, and watched over the lighthouses and the lift bridge, and enjoyed the start of the weekend!
By 6:14 this morning, the first of the listed ships on the Marine Shipping Schedule had gone past (missed it by minutes), but it was a small one, and so I didn't miss the large barge horn blasts and bridge opening.
The morning views are equally beautiful, though I am glad it wasn't a (very) pink sky at Dawn as that has unpleasant omens for today's weather.
So it looks like I have photographic proof that there is a lake in Duluth (it's always been socked away behind a wall of fog) and that I am not the fog-bringer of our family and friends' lore.
Time to figure out the in-room coffee and get started on a north shore day!
Thanks for stopping by!
